You would think that Security and Fire Alarm companies are beyond reproach. Sadly, as with any trade, there are those trustworthy companies but all too many operating fraudulently or with total disregard for the industry's British Standards.
The Crime Figures issued by the Home Office show that most Burglaries on Domestic Premises occur on houses without a Burglar Alarm. The main deterrant is the External Sounder with a professional companies Logo; the 103Db Sound Level alerting neighbours. It also has Flashing LEDS that give the visual deterrant during the night. Some uncertified companies seem to ignore this overwhelming evidence and just put a simple sign on the wall!
In the following video, from the National Security Inspectorate and BBC, you will see a prime example of a home security installation fraudster in action. In the Fake Britain report, the Fraudster is winning business and fitting burglar alarms under false pretences. He is trading fraudulently in two ways:
- Fake certificates invalidated the victim's insurance
- Trading under a false name harmed the reputation of a good company and stole business from them
If the security /fire company you're considering for your install is not approved (NSI or BAFE) they are at best inexperienced and at worst ineffective and fraudulent! It's as simple as that. If they say they are approved, you need to check and verify it. Please watch the report, it's only nine minutes long. You will be left in astonishment at the barefaced underhandedness of this particular criminal.
Why choose an approved company for your alarm installation?
If you want a trouble-free installation that won't come back to give you trouble, then choose an approved installer - and the Police Authorities and Fire & Rescue Services agree. On their website, they suggest using an accredited company registered with NSI or BAFE.
Essentially, you're getting a better service with an approved security system installer. NSI and BAFE are concerned with separating "the strong (performers) from the weak". They check that installed fire and security alarm systems are of the highest quality and reliability and comply with all relevant British Standards.
Burglar / Fire Alarm Installation - checking approvals:
It only takes a few minutes to check if a the security company you're considering using is genuinely approved by NSI, here's how.
The short report from Fake Britain highlights some of the lengths unscrupulous security traders out there.
The simple truth is you should ALWAYS use an approved company to install your home or business security system. It is straight forward to check the validity of the approvals a security system installer is claiming. So don't take it on face value, do your verification!
